Recommended and Allowed Video Source Formats and Specifications

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Summary

The OTTera transcoding pipeline can take most video formats though we do have some preferences that should be considered before bringing content into the system.

Recommended Source Format

Video

Source: 1920x1080 uncompressed AVC (4k 3840x2160 supported as well) (ProRes .mov  or .MXF supported, but recommend MP4)

Codec: h264

Container: MP4 preferred

Bitrate: 12-15 Mbps; higher bitrates may result in larger-than-needed files, incurring longer upload times and higher fixed costs. We recommend only uploading files that are already within the 12-15 Mbps range.

Frame Rate: 29.97 fps and 30 fps (These are the typical fps required by many vendors)

In general most frame rates are supported, but we recommend 24 fps or 30 as we do 6 second chunking. If possible consistency across the library is also recommended as changing frame rates may cause problems on some players. The ideal library would adhere to a standard frame rate for all videos.

Audio

Channels: Stereo, Mono

Sample Size: 44.1 kHz or lower

Sound Levels: Normalized to ATSC A/85 Integrated Loudness

Please note that when ingesting files, only the first audio track will be considered by default. This in turn means that, for single language applications, audio should be in a single audio track with the required channels. It should not be split into multiple tracks, with a single channel each.

For files containing multiple audio tracks for the use of multiple languages, see Multi-Audio below.

Supported Media File Formats

Mpeg-4 and QuickTime Formats (MP4, MOV, QT, and M4V), Flash Video (FLV and F4V), Microsoft Windows Formats (AVI, ASF, WMV and WMA), MPEG-1/2 (MPG, M1V, M2V, MP3), WAV, Matroska (MKV), OGG OGM & OGV, WEBM, 3GP, RM, Webex (ARF), MXF

The Maximum Video Frame Size is 5000 x 5000.

Audio Codecs

MP3, MP1/2, AC3, EAC3, AAC, Vorbis, AMR, PCM, WMA7/8/9, WMSpeech, FLAC, QDM2, RA, Nellymoser, Cook, GSM, SPEEX

Multi-Audio

Mezzanine videos must contain stereo audio tracks (split mono is not supported) that are marked with ISO 639-2 Codes.

Please note that the audio tracks must have the exact same duration as the video, otherwise only the tracks with the same length will be ingested, and further manually triggered transcoding will still result in the actual audio content being ignored.

A full list of supported codes can be found here:

https://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php

If you plan to upload assets with multiple audio tracks, please reach out to your OTTera account manager as we will need to enable specific transcoding profiles.  At this time, the following audio languages are supported:

English (eng)

French (fre)

Spanish (spa)

German (ger)

Italian ((ita)

Japanese (jpn)

Korean (kor)

Chinese (zho)

Polish (pol)

Russian (run)

Hugarian (hun)

Non-Linguistic (zxx)
